Our luck took a turn. But not for the better. We pulled up in front of the address that we had for Matthew Marks. There was no vehicle in the drive. Footprints were leading from the house to the driveway, and tire tracks leading from the driveway to the street. I knew it had snowed yesterday, so that meant that Marks, or someone else, had been at the house since then. It wasn’t as if he had shot Jake and left town immediately. Well, not unless he had a recent visitor. Like a blackmailer who didn’t know he had left town.

“Do we catch this guy at work, or go to the next person on our list?”

Lou looked at his watch.

“It’s already well past when most people eat lunch, and my stomach is telling me it’s time for me to eat.”

“I think you’re right. Blue Moon or Antonio’s?”

“How about Blue Moon now, Antonio’s or The Feed Bucket tonight, and whichever one we don’t get to tonight, we’ll catch for lunch tomorrow?”

“Sounds good to me.”

We headed to see Rosie but told her that we had to eat quickly because we had to rid the world of someone who had put an end to someone worse than they were. She looked at us like she was not sure whether to believe us or not but went and dished out a couple of bowls of chili. Chili hits the spot on a cold winter day.

We figured Marks was probably still at work after we finished eating, so we headed to the next name on our list, Alice Johnson, who I didn’t think worked. I felt much better when I pulled into a driveway behind a car I saw parked there covered in snow. She lived in an older neighborhood where many of the houses were two-story frame houses with wooden front porches. Lou and I got out of the Jeep and made our way to the front door. Before we could step up onto the front porch, a tall, big-boned woman, who looked like she was entering her retirement years, met us at the front door with her arms crossed.

“Got me enough insurance.”

“It’s a good thing that we’re not here to sell you any more then, isn’t it?”

“Already got me a church too. Don’t want to hear nothing about yours.”

“Even if I don’t try to get you to change from your church to mine?”

“Nope. You’re interrupting my TV programs as it is.”

“I’m sorry about that, but I’m here on police business. At least I am if you’re Alice Johnson.”

“I ain’t done nothing wrong. At least not in the last day or two.”

“What about before that?”

She laughed.

“I assume you want to come in.”

“You won’t be as cold that way.”

“I bet I can handle the cold better than you can. Wipe your feet, then come on in and sit a spell. Tell me what’s on your mind.”

Lou and I stepped inside. The house was clean and neat. I sat on the couch. Lou took a chair on the other side of the room.
